Description

Introducing the Inkplate 5Gen2, a versatile board compatible with Arduino and MicroPython platforms, featuring a recycled 5.2" E-Ink (e-paper) display with fast refresh times of just 0.22 seconds. This fully open, plug-and-play device, powered by the ESP32 microcontroller, is designed for effortless internet connectivity via WiFi or with other devices via Bluetooth.

Its energy-efficient design allows for ultra-low power consumption, enabling it to operate for months on a single charge of a Li-ion battery. The Inkplate 5Gen2 is not only about power and connectivity; it's also about convenience. The built-in microSD slot and real-time clock provide unlimited data storage possibilities and precise timekeeping. The device even features numerous GPIO pins, allowing easy expansion of your projects with almost any peripheral device. A USB-C to USB-C cable is included in the package, so you can start using it right out of the box.

Designed for high-performance embedded development, the Inkplate 5Gen2 fully supports Espressif's official ESP-IDF framework. This native environment grants developers low-level control over the hardware, enabling precise memory management, optimized display rendering routines, and custom power profiling to take full advantage of the board's ultra-low deep sleep capabilities. The e-paper display of the Inkplate 5Gen2 offers visual delight. It provides a beautiful, sharp image under all conditions, including direct sunlight. The display resolution is 1280x720 pixels, in monochromatic mode, supporting black, white, and 6 shades of gray. The most interesting part? The E-Ink display requires no power between screen updates.

The Inkplate 5Gen2 refreshes at a speed of 0.99s for a full refresh and 0.22s for a partial refresh.

I use this fine e-ink board as a weather display (connected via WLAN to a little Raspberry Pi Zero server) that is very easy to read and quite reliable. Coding in Micropython was fun and easy and I really liked the function that directly displays a png fetched from an URL, cool!. Noted however a minor bug: battery voltages show up at 3.7-4.5V, which seems strange. But I am quite happy with it and the dsiplay runs on battery for several days!

High-quality product and helpful customer service. I'm deducting one star because the display wasn't aligned perfectly straight on the circuit board. It doesn't bother me in the final product, but it’s a slight oversight in assembly.

Thanks for the purchase and feedback with the screen. Will be looking into some improved tooling solutions to get this in the better shape!

The display works as advertised. Deducting one star as ESP Home is not natively supported (although they are clear about it in FAQ). I wanted to use this for a HA user case and Arduino IDE worked just as well.

The Inkplate 5Gen2 is supported natively in ESPHome, and you can call its variant as described in the ESPHome docs here: https://esphome.io/components/display/inkplate/#configuration-variables

However, a big refactor is currently available as a PR here, which will also add better support for all boards: https://github.com/esphome/esphome/pull/17179
